VICE-CAPTAIN Michael Clarke twice referred sticky questions relating to Australia's bowling strategy to his captain, Ricky Ponting, in a possible indication that communication lines between Australia's on-field leaders are not clear.

Clarke was asked why Andrew Symonds was not introduced into the attack until the 125th over of South Africa's first innings. "I have no idea," Clarke said. "I guess you'd probably have to ask Ricky that."

Clarke was also quizzed on the decision not to employ Simon Katich's handy wrist spinners. "Again, probably another question for the skip. I don't make the bowling selections."
